OHSAS 18001:2007 Occupational Health & Safety

BS OHSAS 18001 sets out the minimum requirements for Occupational Health and Safety Management best practice in the work environment.

OHSAS 18001 is unusual in that it is not an ISO Standard, but was designed and implemented by an industry agreement to fill a glaring gap in earlier standards. This standard is globally recognised.

OHSAS 18001:2007 includes elements of the quality aspects of ISO 9001 and some of the environmental components of ISO 14001 to embrace Occupational Health and Safety requirements for Businesses and Organisations of every kind.

OHSAS 18001 covers areas including Risk Assessment, Hazard Management, Performance and Monitoring, Training and emergency preparedness.

As the Owner, Senior Manager or Director of a Business or Organisation, you are now legally obliged to ensure the safety of your staff, customers and general public, in and around your working environments.

The Health and Safety (Offences) Act 2008 came into force on 16 January 2009 which introduced additional penalties for both employers and employees who are found guilty of health and safety offences. Although the Health and Safety at Work (etc) Act 1974 remains the key statute for outlining the duties of employers and employees, the Act allows greater sanctions to be imposed in both the Magistrates’ and the Crown Court.

The Act marks a new era in health and safety where any individual within an organisation can now be sent to prison for breaches of health and safety law. A custodial sentence is now a feasible penalty for many health and safety offences where previously only a fine could have been imposed.
